Movement Research & Transcendent States.

In the course of my dance studies training, I encountered a profound state of being that reshaped my understanding of who I am as a human alive in this world. I felt connected to a deeper wisdom and experienced a connection to something far larger than myself. I felt movement flow through me without my conscious choice as though I myself was only a medium and not the agent. In those moments, I felt a profound connection to a greater sense of being. This experience sparked a deep curiosity about its nature, a yearning to learn about how to experience it again, and a genuine desire to guide others on a similar journey.

Through my research I have come to learn that these glimpses and experiences can be called transcendent states and/or Altered States of Consciousness and that they are often deemed intangible, ineffable, and hard to put down in words. They intersect spiritual, psychological and scientific fields of research and can be studied through many activities that act as mediums to these states such as movement, music and breathwork. The benefits of experiencing transcendent states have been linked to the reduction of physical pain, a reduction in the severity of symptoms of Crohn’s disease, and have also shown promising results in the treatment of substance use disorder. Transcendent states have been found to improve health and quality of life through a number of life enhancing experiences such as acceptance, tolerance, peace, love, deeper connections with self and other and a deeper connection to the whole.

I am currently exploring my research based offerings in mindful movement classes. If you’re curious to try a mindful movement get in touch to find out about the next one.

This work has been presented at the Fifth International Conference on Pluralistic Counselling and Psychotherapy, 2022 and the poster below was presented at Imagine International Dramatherapy Conference, Netherlands, 2023.

My first research was a self-study from a dance and yogic perspective and can be found here - Study 1: Telescoping Awareness.
